What is maths good for? (A real-life maths story series)

maths mindset real-life maths Oct 25, 2026

If only I had infinite time, I could write just about real-life maths, as there's plenty of it. But I only captured a few of these for this blog over the years (believe it or not, writing about maths still doesn't pay the bills, while maths tuition does… so guess what I spend more time doing ๐Ÿ˜„)

But even these 4 examples below might make you start thinking about maths in a little bit more favourable light. Because maths really helps in real life. Or helps you orient yourself, predict or confirm things you don’t want to “just guess”, and the list goes on.

Once, I even saved us nearly £1000 on a wrongly calculated energy bill. But that’s a story for another time… (or just browse my blog and find it ๐Ÿ˜‰)

This will be a very short blog post, as I mostly wanted to highlight the four articles I wrote in the past, as I believe they deserve more spotlight, since I still so often hear people scoffing at maths and saying (often proudly) “I’ll never use maths in real life.” ๐Ÿง

Well, each to their own, but if you’re one of the maths-curious or at least open-minded to the possibility that maths can actually be helpful in real life, check out these further blog posts:

This one is my own story and no, it’s not about what mathematicians need maths for, it’s rather about planning a journey…

This one is also absolutely for everyone and especially great for those who, just like me, need to keep an eye on spending and value (and no, it’s not always as straightforward as checking the price per kg many shops provide).

Btw, speaking of comparing shop prices, that leads me to “best buy” — a common topic (especially in GCSE and iGCSE maths) that deals with proportions.

And it’s so common in real life, for so many people, that I based my theory explanation of this topic on a real-life example. This is taken from the ever-growing Maths Video Library that you can access in full as a member of Maths Club (and as it stands, currently you can also try it for free for a week), so if you’re curious to learn more or perhaps smash one goal in a week (I’ll help you with it), you’re more than welcome; check more details here.

But now, here’s the video of real-life maths as promised:

(If it doesn’t play or show, let me know; I’ll fix it.)

So, are you better equipped to choose a better value now? Or at least show your young learner that maths is useful in real life?

Cool! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

And if you want more maths with me, now you know where to find Maths Club. Just go and try it if you’re curious. It costs nothing to try ๐Ÿ˜Š
