Q: What's the difference between Maths and Applications of Maths?
A: Applications of Maths, as the name of the exam suggests, focuses more on real-life applications and tends to be more suitable for learners who are not aiming for high grades in QS Maths (Nat 5 or Higher). Learners who find Maths difficult are often advised to take Applications instead. Schools may advise a switch if necessary or deemed more suitable for the learner, even during the exam year.
Speaking of which, IĀ specialise in Maths, not Applications of Maths, but I'm happy to point you towards other independent educators who focus on Applications of Maths if that's what you need help with.

Not long ago, the Scottish Qualifications Authority changed its name to Qualifications Scotland.Ā I've been changing the wording throughout my website and blog (you may spot some old wording somewhere; if so, please let me know), but rest assured, no matter whether you ask me for SQ or SQA, I know what you need help with š

Q:Ā What resources do you use for your maths tuition?
A:Ā For the exam years, the baseline resources are questions based on official QS (SQA) maths past papers, but I tend to mix in suitable additional resources, as well as I'm happy to work with resrouces the students bring in the sessions if that's their preference.
For younger learners, I use a broader range of resources, depending on our current goals and topics.
And, of course, for Nat 5 Maths students, I provide access to my own video theory library, extra practice, and past paper walkthroughs, which proves to be useful even for some Higher Maths students who want to refresh some key Nat 5 skills.
